Newmains on Wheels Event 2024

The event, which was organised by Connor Mooney of Cairney Cycles and the Newmains Community Trust and featured partners Getting Better Together Shotts, Trackside Training Centre, Scottish BMX School, and the Clydesdale Colts, gave individuals of all ages the chance to resume riding and engage in physical activity.

Scottishbmxschool was asked along by Connor to be part of the event and provide accessible BMX lessons for the community. Here is what Connor had to say about the lessons we provided.

Connor Mooney- Owner Cairney Cycles

“Reece at Scottish BMX School has helped the residents of Newmains to celebrate and get excited about BMXing. He works in a professional but fun manner making it easy to tailor the sessions to the needs of the community, at the Newmains on Wheels event we had brilliant feedback from the residents young and old who were trying BMX flatland for the first time. Despite the horrible weather Scottish BMX School delivered a high quality ,safe session and I would recommend the business to any community group, business or individual looking to bring in BMX expertise. Cheers Reece”

The aim of the event was also to create a buzz around cycling, and bring together local grassroot organisations to deliver great cycling activities for the whole family during the school Easter holidays.

Organiser Connor Mooney from Cairney Cycles, said: “Our Newmains on Wheels project is a small scale rental service for the residents of town. Cycling UK funding has helped us provide bikes to the community. I encourage everyone in Newmains to come down and sign up to the scheme waiting list as we’ve got 11 eBikes that are already in high demand.”

Connor also revealed a future cycle strategy for North Lanarkshire which aims to create a circular economy and use the bike as a starting point for work-based skills development.
